Discovering the Etna volcano by Jeep

Talking about Etna we have to imagine a complex volcanic system, young and active, which has three large summit craters.

The base of this immense volcano measures about 200 kilometers. Thanks to the different climatic exposures, it has macro areas different from each other, as regards to climate and average annual temperatures. It changes the vertical limit of the most important crops such as vines, olives and citruses.

For this reason, we prefer to differ our tours between Etna North and Etna South with variants that can touch the Eastern and Western slopes.

ITINERARY

Etna Wine Route

Our experience will start from your hotel, where our 8-seater off-roader TOYOTA LAND CRUISER with your expert Etna driver will pick you up at the scheduled time.

We will leave the sea behind, and ascend the Northeast slope of Mount Etna, driving through the small volcanic towns of Presa and Vena until we reach the Etna Wine Route. That road runs by the most remarkable vineyards of Etna.

From the first kilometers we will see how the vegetation varies with altitude, the citrus groves give place to fruit trees and then to chestnuts. Already at the altitude of 1000 mt asl we will be able to gaze the exciting solid lava flows.

In our off-roader, we will ride up the lava flow of 1979, and after a short walk, we reach our first goal – The Valle del Bove.

That Valley of Ox was formed almost 65 000 years ago due to the collapse of the eastern flank of the volcano. Today it is a giant amphitheater, which collects lava flows and keeps the villages and towns on the Eastern side of Etna safe.

Snow Cave

Get back on board of our jeep, we will take towards the altitude of 1700 mt asl, where we have a chance to visit one of two hundred lava caves of Mount Etna.

That particular cave is called Snow Cave because over the years it used to be a hold for snow, which was stored there to be then resold in the following summer.

Afterwards the Refugio Citelli will give us shelter for some refreshments.

We will be continuing with the hiking of about 4 km.

The trail will take us directly to the eruption of year 1865, which gave rise to the eruptive system of Sartorius Mountains.

That circuit is ideal for all ages and fit, it is about 150 mt of difference in altitude. There will be many points of interest during the walk such as massive lava bombs, indigenous Etna flora, the front view of the biggest cinder cone of Etna and much more.

At the end of our mountain tour, we will have lunch in a typical and very welcoming refuge at 1850 mt asl.

In the afternoon, we will begin the descent towards the Etna town of Linguaglossa with the intention to visit the Alcantara Valley with its famous “Alcantara Gorges“.

We will get back to your hotel in the afternoon.

The duration of this tour is about 8 hours. Jeep sharing intending.

The tour includes:
Chauffeured all-terrain vehicle Toyota Land cruiser, equipment for visit the caves and for hiking, pick up and drop off at your hotel.
