Serracozzo cave

The Mount Etna has a myriad of areas that are worth to be visited.

Beyond the summit craters, the extinct craters, the wineries and the villages at the foot of the Volcano, the volcanic caves are characteristic of Mount Etna.

This phenomenon occurs when during an eruption the superficial part of the stream of lava cools on contact with air, forms a solid crust, but in its interior the path of lava advances, forming a tunnel.

Hence, also the corrugated shape that some of the caves take on.

This is the case of Corruccio Cave named after the homonymous mountain where it is located, on the Northern slope of the Volcano.

Meeting point will be at Rifugio Ragabo Etna Nord (Coord: 37.8087807 – 15.0698792).

This excursion does not include the pick up and drop at your place, but if necessary you can request it at booking stage.

Serracozzo Cave

The walk starts at Refugio Ragabo on Etna North.

The path is short and child-friendly – 1 km, 35 minutes long. The hiking goes through the green Etnean woods at an altitude of 1400 meters and has the ascent of 20 meters.

The Corruccio Cave has two sections formed due to a collapse in the central part.

With the necessary precautions, once we get inside, we see the pyramid-shape form of the cave; in the darkest part, there are two tunnels.

Following the road, in the eastern part of the Volcano, at a height of 1750 meters in the area of Refuge Citelli, we will enter the woods of beeches and birches typical only of the Etnean area.

It is a safe an easy walk with fantastic panoramas of Catania Jonian coast. From here, you see the Mount Frumento delle Concazze – the result of lava flow of 1928, which destroyed the village of Mascali.

After about 2 km, we will find the Serracozzo Cave – a lava flow gallery unique in its form and colors that characterize this gem of Etna Volcano at 1830 meters above sea level.

The surreal atmosphere, the sinuous lines demarcated by the eruption and the surroundings are very picturesque and allow you to truly appreciate the power of the Volcano.
