Our excursion “Etna Hiking tour Sartorius Mountains” along the Northern side of the Volcano, up to the Sartorius Mountains is one of the most famous and highly valued within the Territory of Etna Park, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 2015.

For its simplicity, sceneries and naturalistic elements it is amongst the most popular destinations for the visitors of Volcano, who have a short time available, but still wishing to make the fullest possible experience on Etna.

Both from the geological and botanical point of view, the Mount Etna represents an open-air book, exceptionally suitable for the environmental education, especially for families with children.

Meeting point will be at Rifugio Ragabo Etna Nord (Coord: 37.8087807 – 15.0698792).

Bottoniera of Sartorius Mountains

Frumento delle Concazze and Bottoniera Sartorius Mountains

This itinerary is a loop, which runs for about four kilometers, with the duration of about four hours and the difference in altitude from 1600 to 1780 meters above sea level. It leads to the discovery of the so-called bottoniera of Sartorius Mountains – a crater chain born out of the eruption of 1865.

The scenery is characterized by the lava hills, covered with the charming vegetation of pine trees and birches. It shows the effects of the eruption, which gave rise to what we now call the eruptive system of Sartorius Mountains. They take the name from their main researcher – the German geologist Wolfgang Sartorius von Waltershausen.

During the track, there will be many points of interest including massive lavic bombs – huge rocks let fly from the mouth of the volcano during eruptions; wild vegetation of birches – typical northern trees, which flourishes here thanks to the cold climate; a frontal view of the largest cinder cone of Etna – Monte Frumento delle Concazze, and more.

The white forest of a variety of Birch tree, unique to Mount Etna, will lead us along the profile of seven magnificent craters, set in the splendid scenery of what was a massive expanse of glowing lava in 1865.

The splendid lava flow stretches for about eight square kilometers, with an average depth of more than 12 meters.

The route is easy, but it is always advisable to stay close to the tour leader.
