The base of this immense volcano measures about 200 kilometers. Thanks to the different climatic exposures, it has macro areas different from each other, as regards to climate and average annual temperatures. It changes the vertical limit of the most important crops such as vines, olives and citruses.

For this reason, we prefer to differ our tours between Etna North and Etna South with variants that can touch the Eastern and Western slopes.

Refugio Sapienza and Torre del Filosofo

This, no doubt, is the most desirable excursion for those who love hiking! It is a unique trip to the highest active volcano in Europe.

By jeep, we will ascend the Southeastern slope of Mount Etna until we reach the Refugio Sapienza, where we meet our Alpine volcanic guide for the initial briefing. Hiking boots, sticks and warm jackets will be distributed if necessary.

From this point begins the real ascent, first by cable cars from 2000 to 2600 mt of altitude, then by 4×4 minibus up to 2900 mt, to the area called Torre del Filosofo.

Thus begins the hiking, having crossed a wild lava field from the recent eruption of December 2020, we arrive to the altitude of 3000 mt above sea level, the gateway to the summit area of Mt. Etna.

According to the volcanic activity and weather conditions, we will choose the crater for a close-up look – Southeastern, Northeastern craters or Bocca Nuova.

Descent along the edge of Valle del Bove

On our way back to the cable cars at 2600 mt we will visit the lava flow tunnels and continue our descent along the edge of Valle del Bove.

Depending on the weather, the route may vary.

At around 14:30 we will reach the Rifugio Sapienza, from here we go by jeep towards a wine cellar, located on the Etna wine route.

The fragrant notes of Etna wines together with the local flavors will cuddle us at a beautiful location.

The tour ends at your hotel at around 17:30.

ATTENTION

Excursion of average difficulty requires a physical effort given the terrain type, the length of the route and the difference in altitude. It’s only for the adults and children over the age of 10 used to do trekking of several hours.

The excursion could be modified because of weather, environmental conditions or volcanic risk.

Recommended clothing

• Hiking boots, long trousers, hoodie or sweater, windbreaker, gloves, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water 1,5 L per person, packed lunch. (Hiking boots, windbreaker and sticks may be provided by the guide on request).
• It is guide’s right to interrupt the excursion for the safety reasons of one participant or the entire group.

Heart problems, asthma

For persons suffering from such diseases, it is not recommended in the strongest terms to face any kind of hiking activities, both at lower and high quotas.

Contact lens

For all excursions and particularly for those leading to the summit area, due to the continuous presence of volcanic ash carried by the wind, it is recommended to use the contacts together with the sunglasses.
